Beating Brain Fog

How I Beat Afternoon Brain Fog With 15-Minute Visual Sprints

We all know the "afternoon slump." Around 3:00 PM, the coffee has worn off, your lunch is being digested, and your brain starts to feel like it’s filled with cotton wool. This is when most people give up on deep work and switch to mindless tasks (or more caffeine).

Instead of fighting the fog, I started using 15-minute visual sprints.

The "Low Stakes" Work Block

When you have brain fog, the idea of a 60-minute work session is exhausting. Your brain rejects it immediately.

But a 15-minute sprint? Your brain can handle that. I set my visual timer for 15 minutes and pick one small, concrete task. Because I can see how short 15 minutes is, the "entry cost" of working feels much lower. I tell myself: "I only have to focus until that liquid drains."

Momentum is the Cure for Fog

Often, the "fog" is actually a lack of momentum. Once I finish one 15-minute sprint, I usually feel a small sense of achievement. That achievement provides enough of a dopamine hit to clear the fog. I then set another 15-minute timer for a different task.

Before I know it, I’ve completed an hour of work in 15-minute increments. This "chunking" method is only possible because the visual timer makes the intervals feel tangible and manageable.
