The Visual Timer Method I Use to Tackle Laundry Without Getting Distracted

Laundry is a "multi-stage" chore. You wash, you dry, you fold, you put away. The problem is the gaps between the stages. It’s incredibly easy to "forget" a load in the washer until it smells like mildew, or to leave a pile of clean clothes on the couch for three days. Laundry fails because we lose the "momentum" of the cycle.

The reason we forget laundry is that it happens behind a closed door. It’s "out of sight, out of mind."

Now, as soon as I start the washing machine, I start a visual timer on my phone or a kitchen tablet. I set it for the exact duration of the cycle. I also use a 15-minute visual timer for folding. Folding laundry is boring, which is why we avoid it. But 15 minutes of "racing the liquid" is a fun challenge. Seeing the timer prevents me from getting distracted by the TV or my phone and helps me get the entire basket finished before the color is gone.
