How I Remember to Take Screen Breaks Using a Desk Visual Timer
Most of us spend the majority of our day staring at a screen. We know we should take breaks for our eyes (the 20-20-20 rule) and for our posture, but when we get into a "flow state" or a busy task, we completely forget. Before we know it, four hours have passed, and we have a headache and a stiff neck.
I finally fixed this by making my breaks visible on my desk.
The Problem with Passive Alarms
I used to use phone notifications to remind me to stand up. But they were too easy to ignore. I would "dismiss" the notification and tell myself I’d move in five minutes, and then I’d forget again.
A visual timer is different. It’s a constant, "active" presence in my peripheral vision. I don’t have to wait for an alarm; I can see the break approaching. When I see the liquid getting low, I start wrapping up my current thought so I can actually take the break when it arrives.
The 50/10 Rhythm
I’ve adopted a 50/10 rhythm for my health. I set a 50-minute visual timer for work, followed by a 10-minute visual timer for a "Physical Break." During those 10 minutes, I move away from the screen, stretch, and drink water.
Seeing the 10-minute "Rest Block" as a physical quantity of color helps me respect it. I don’t feel guilty about resting because the timer says it’s time to rest. It has dramatically reduced my daily eye strain and back pain.
